Retired, Coal-Tar Industry - New South Wales, Australia Prior to reading this publication, my knowledge of the subject matter was only moderate, however, having worked in the Coal-Tar industry for some 12 years in the 1950's, I remained very keen to consume the content because of my strong interest in this subject. This publication will be an eye opener for anyone who reads it. It is well constructed, excellently researched, and very well documented.
Plastics-Polymer Processing Engineer - New South Wales, Australia This is a must read publication demanding the most serious attention, the next generations are dependent on it. The book describes a scenario that at this moment in time, may be difficult to perceive, but in the immediate future, will be impossible to ignore. Truly a warts and all look into what a future without cheap and affordable crude oil holds for all of us.
Chemical Engineer, Oil Consultant, Lecturer, Senior Adviser to the National Iranian Oil Company, Global Oil Industry Adviser - Iran Book review as posted on www.samsambakhtiari.com This 180-page book [ Version 1.01 - 226 A4 pages ], is a large compendium of the main matters related to 'Peak Oil' --- that unique and critical phenomenon of our times. It takes the reader on a vast tour of pertinent aspects and major consequences of this limit to global oil production. Mr. Burns adequately begins with a brief history of oil and of its origins before focusing on the peak of worldwide oil production first developed by Dr. King Hubbert and Dr. Colin Campbell. He also presents a number of useful references on the subject matter. The case for global oil depletion is well presented with reviews of all major OPEC and Non-OPEC countries (with the Saudi case and the analyses of the Australian and Canadian predicaments being of special interest). It all cascades down to Hydrocarbon Man's "lethal dependency" on crude oil and to the pivotal fact that "some fuels are imperative for survival" with little to be expected from other energy sources (as the author doesn't seem to be optimistic about fusion). The all-important 'Energy Capital Return Ratio' (also known as the 'Energy Profit Ratio' or 'Energy Return on Investment') is clearly highlighted --- with Mr. Burns giving a historical ratio of 5:1 for 2000 and a 'peak ratio' of 1:1 for the year 2007. The inescapable parallelism between 'Peak Oil' and the peaking of global population is discussed and presented graphically, with Mr. Burns envisioning for 2020 a global oil output of 60 mb/d and a world population having dwindled to 5.1 billion people. Here, it is worth adding, that the whole book is peppered with relevant statistics (that can be readily used as references), and also contains useful graphical representations which are both explanatory and help clarify the points being made. Finally, Mr. Burns doesn't spare us the nastier and darker consequences of 'Peak Oil' as he skims over the inevitable wars, the possible cataclysms and the long train of social disruptions that will most probably be experienced in 'Peak Oil's wake. However, I also found some weaknesses in this valuable manuscript such as the long oil chronology (over five pages) and the protracted lists of chapter four --- which do not bring much substance and are difficult to make efficient use of. All in all, however, 'Energy of Oil' comes at the right time to enlighten a wide spectrum of readers on the crucial question of 'Peak Oil', and it might well take its place among the references on this subject which is of paramount importance for all.
University Chemistry Professor, Oil Supply Analyst, Hydrocarbons refinery and production expert - Sault Ste Marie, MI, United States Dr. Blanchard is the Author of The Future of Global Oil Production Kenneth Burns has produced a well-written comprehensive text dealing with the impending decline of global oil production. He has included a detailed and interesting history of the use of oil that dates back well over 1000 years. He has many informative figures and graphs that adds immeasureably to an understanding of the issue. He covers aspects of the nature and importance of oil that I’ve not seen in other publications. This book is a valuable contribution to the literature dealing with oil depletion.
Mechanical Engineer - New South Wales, Australia This publication is well and truly an eye opener and can be aptly described as a noble act of social awareness to mankind. I am particularly impressed by Chapter 4 which explains quite clearly the extent of dependency on Hydrocarbon based products in our day-to-day lives. Reading this book through the eyes of a mechanical engineer, it becomes quite evident that industry as a whole is rapidly approaching a disastrous phase. Just about all materials, processes, machinery and energy sources used in industry today are linked directly or indirectly to crude oil. In my view, Chapter 9 is of real value to readers, as it deals with ideas to reduce dependency and thus, minimise the impact of this forthcoming energy crisis. The time taken to consume the content this publication provides has been a very rewarding investment.
Security Risk Control Supervisor - New South Wales, Australia Prior to reading this book, my knowledge of the devastating effects oil depletion has on the planet and humanity, was limited to say the least. This publication has raised my awareness of the disastrous consequences of oil depletion, and has also provided universal and renewable solutions that mitigate the impact of these problems. Even considering the message this book provides when viewed from a younger generation and perspective, it remains clearly evident that an alarming and uncertain future awaits us all. I strongly recommend this book and can only urge those who read it, to do something positive with the valuable knowledge it provides. kjbdsd.com, hydrocarbonuniverse.com, and the hydrocarbon universe web site, remains the intellectual and legal property of KJB DYNAMIC SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENTS - ABN 88996519952 |
