the Ford vs Holden
tussle. Six 8 lap heats
saw 4 winners - #99
Jeremy McGrath (Heat1),
#1 Gary Smith (Heat 2),
#5 Brad Bassett (x2 -
Heats 3 and 5) and #ACT7
Kevin Sherwood (x2 -
Heats 4 and 6).
Good battles through
out the heats kept the
spectators interested
with Bassett, Sherwood
and Sims all looking
strong and on the money.
Other than some rubbing
and a couple of flat
tyres there was no damage
seen during these races.
A similar story regarding
damage in the support
races (other than the
intended mayhem in the
Fender Benders) was the
order of the day. It
seemed that respect for
your own and others
machinery was high on
everyones mind on this
day.
Previous meetings in
the 2006-07 season had
seen 1 feature win each
to Sims and Bassett.
Those finals were over 15
laps distance, the South
Coast title would be run
over 25 laps (originaly
35 laps in the programme,
cut to a sensible 25).
Just as twilight faded
from the sky the cars
took to the track for
event 19, the final.The
line-up was Maskell on
Pole with Bassett to his
right, Sherwood and
McGrath on row 2. Sims
and Sheather filled the
3rd row with Ford and
Mitchell next. Hamilton
and Elliot filling the
5th and final row.
Bassett was the man in
the final, the longer the
race went the stronger he
looked. McGrath in the
#99 Commodore was an
early retirement with a
flat tyre with Marskell
the other DNF suffering
overheating later in the
race. In the final
stages, after a restart
for a spinning Glen
Mitchell, Chris Sims
challenged Bassett but
didn't have the speed to
get past the red and
white Falcon. Ford, from
7th starting position was
the biggest mover in the
field chasing the back
bumper of Sims home for
3rd.
