Round 4, Goulburn December 15, 2007 |
| After
an absence of many years Super Sedans
returned to Goulburn Speedway on December
15 for Rd. 4 of the Carline Mufflers NSW
Series. Under an overcast sky the
'Capital of Country Speedway' provided a
difficult track to master for the high
horse power brigade. Goulburn and the
surrounding area has suffered badly
during the drought but recent rain
allowed track preparation to go ahead,
including watering for this meeting. |
|
| Entries 15
entries were listed in
the programme, including
local Super Six driver
Paul Kranitis in his
immaculate VE Commodore.
On the night a total of a
dozen Supers were in the
pits. Series leader,
Lachlan Onley, was
present with his Mustang
as was the other Mustang
of Paddy Ward. They were
joined by the Pontiac
Grand Prixs of Tony
Barklimore, Michael
Hickey and Ron Pyne.

Peter Renshaw's elderly

Kranitis. Brown, Sims and
Sulis were listed but did
not make the show. |
| Hot
Laps |
| In Hot Laps
it was obvious that the
tight Goulburn track was
giving some drivers a few
headaches, especially
turn 1. Toward the end of
the session Roberts had
to throw the #44 into a
spin to avoid a stranded
John Perkins. In the same
incident Ron Pyne bought
the #9 to a quick stop
and was not able to get
the Auto One car going
again. He was pushed back
to the pits but took no
further part in the show. |
| Heats |
| To arrive at
the starting order for
the Final, 4x10 lap heats
were run. |
| Heat 1:
Turn 1 of the first lap
and all hell broke loose
as Brett Smith backed the
#16 into the Goulburn
concrete and was joined
by Towers. After the
restart a good battle
developed between McKeown
and Hickey until Onley
turned his Mustang around
in T1. Hickey then got
the better of McKeown but
was passed by Smith. |
 |
| Despite
damage to the right rear
corner of the #16 he went
on to win the race.
Hickey followed him home
with Onley 3rd. McKeown
looped the RX7 several
times and Renshaw
performed a 'Wall of
Death' act on the last
lap that resulted in him
putting the car back on
the trailer and bussing
it home. |
| Heat 2:
Paddy Ward took the
Castrol Edge Mustang to
victory in this one with
Roberts home second and
Barklimore third.
Kranitis had a spin at
half distance and Perkins
had half a lose in T1 on
lap 9. It seemed obvious
from this race that Ward
was one driver that had
worked out how to attack
the Goulburn track. It
was also obvious that
local interest Paul
Kranitis, whilst holding
his own through turns
1-2, was being blown away
in a straight line by
cars with around twice
the horse power. |
| Heat 3:
Starting order for this
heat, the 20th scheduled
event of the night, was -
Hickey, Towers, Onley,
Smith and McKeown. Hickey
led the first lap but the
first corner of the
second lap was as far as
he went as the Pontiac
ran wide and smacked the
edge of the wall |

Challenger |
 |
| Paul
Kranitis (Orange shirt)
presented an exceptionaly
well prepared car to take
on the visiting V8s. The
VE bodied Super Six is
powered by an engine
built by 2 time
Australian champ, David
House. However, as he
eluded to over the PA, he
needed another 300 or so
horses to be on an even
footing. |

of the
pit exit. It was a very
hard impact on the
driver's side, the #55
was towed to the pits
with some frantic work
applied to it to get to
the Final. Lachlan Onley
took the chequered flag
from Smith, McKeown and
Towers bringing up the
rear with a seemingly
ill-handling car. Heat
4: This was the best
chance Kranitis had to
show what he could do
against the visitors. He
started from pole with
Barklimore beside him
followed by Perkins,
Roberts and Ward. At the
green flag Barklimore's
V8 outgunned the local
six and moved to the
lead, Roberts had a big
moment out of turn 2 and
balked Perkins. Kranitis
kept Ward at bay until
exiting turn 2 on the
second lap. Ward was the
big mover and sliced his
way through to the lead
in very quick time but
the dice that had all the
attention was between
Kranitis and Roberts for
3rd place. For lap after
lap Kranitis kept the
Carline car behind him by
running the low line and
not allowing his car to
get too sideways in the
corners. Roberts was able
to, on many occasions,
draw almost level on the
outside when exiting the
corners into the
straights but would then
have to fall back to

as the laps ran down and he finished
8th.Towers, who had a number of spins
through the race, was a non-finisher. So
with 2 heat wins and a victory in the
Feature Paddy Ward moved up the points
table from 8th to 5th and Lachlan Onley
kept his lead in the series. Next round
for the Super Sedans is at Gunnedah on
February 2nd. |
